Thermal Pulsation

Thermal pulsation treatment uses controlled heat and gentle pressure applied to the eyelids to help open blocked meibomian glands and improve the flow of oil.

These glands produce the oil layer of the tear film, which helps prevent tears from evaporating too quickly. When they are not functioning properly, symptoms such as dryness, irritation, and fluctuating vision can persist despite the use of artificial tears.

How thermal pulsation works

Thermal pulsation uses a specialized device that delivers localized heat to the inner eyelids while applying gentle, controlled pressure to the outer eyelids. This combination helps soften thickened oil within the glands and express blockages more effectively.

By improving the flow and quality of oil released from the glands, the tear film becomes more stable and better able to protect the surface of the eye.

In many cases, thermal pulsation is used alongside other treatments such as meibomian gland expression, radiofrequency (RF), or IPL to address both gland function and underlying inflammation.

Who may benefit from thermal pulsation

Thermal pulsation may be recommended for patients who have:

• Dry eye that does not improve with drops
• Meibomian gland dysfunction
• Blocked or poorly functioning oil glands
• Thickened oil within the glands
• Evaporative dry eye
• Burning, irritation, or fluctuating vision
• Symptoms that persist despite standard treatments

A detailed dry eye evaluation is needed to determine if thermal pulsation is appropriate.

Book a dry eye evaluation

Thermal pulsation is often used as part of a personalized treatment plan focused on improving meibomian gland function and restoring tear film stability.

Treatment recommendations are based on advanced testing of the tear film, meibomian glands, and ocular surface.

Book a consultation to find out if thermal pulsation or other advanced treatments may be appropriate for your dry eye symptoms.
