Radiofrequency (RF) treatment is used for dry eye caused by meibomian gland dysfunction, inflammation, and poor oil gland function in the eyelids. When the oil layer of the tear film is not working properly, tears evaporate too quickly, leading to burning, irritation, fluctuating vision, and chronic dryness.
Radiofrequency treatment gently warms the eyelids to help soften thickened oil in the glands and improve the quality of the tear film. It is often used as part of a comprehensive dry eye treatment plan based on advanced testing of the tear film, meibomian glands, and ocular surface.
How radiofrequency (RF) works
Radiofrequency treatment uses controlled heat applied to the eyelids to warm the meibomian glands and surrounding tissue. This helps soften thickened oil inside the glands and improves the flow of oil into the tear film.
The gentle heat also helps reduce inflammation and improve blood flow to the eyelids, which can support healthier gland function over time.
In many cases, radiofrequency treatment is combined with meibomian gland expression to help clear blocked glands, or with IPL treatment to help reduce inflammation affecting the eyelids.
Who may benefit from radiofrequency treatment
RF may be recommended for patients who have:
• Dry eye that does not improve with drops
• Meibomian gland dysfunction
• Thick or blocked oil glands
• Eyelid inflammation or redness
• Ocular rosacea or facial rosacea
• Burning, irritation, or fluctuating vision
• Evaporative dry eye
A detailed dry eye evaluation is needed to determine if radiofrequency treatment is appropriate.
